The symbol of celebration of the new millennium in London, the “Millennium Dome” is the world’s biggest dome, which was built on the Meridian Line in Greenwich to celebrate the historic event of dawn of the millennium. This massive arena was closed to the public on 31st December 2000 and was re-opened on 24 June 2007, as “The O2 / Millennium Dome”.
The structure was designed by the “Richard Rogers Partnership” and the upper cover of the dome is made of PTFE-coated glass fiber, which has an estimated minimum lifetime of 25 years. The arena is 50 meters high at its center. It is twice the size of the Wembley stadium and covers 20 acres of ground floor space which is expected to be durable until 2018. At the beginning it was suggested that the dome be abolished and to convert it into a high-tech business park, which would give an outlook of an indoor city complete with streets, parks, and buildings. But afterwards it was decided to develop the Dome as a multifunctional sports and entertainment complex while expanding spaces for housing, shops and offices. Then, in order to gain more and more attention of the public, the arena included many more facilities for even musical concerts. More over it is also scheduled to be Used during the 2012 Olympics in London, as the venue for gymnastics, basketball finals and handball finals.
Also there was a variety of other attractions both in and outside of the dome. Inside the dome there is a play area which is called “Timekeepers of the Millennium”. And outside the stadium are the Childhood Cube, Greenwich Pavilion, the Hanging Gardens at the front of the Dome, as well as various kinds of other installations and monuments. In consequence, the area is always Full of people from all over the world witnessing highly profitable revenue through many ways. This is a major fact that booms the number of tourists approaching the hotels in London that are within close proximity of the Millennium Dome.
It is now known as “The O2 arena” and given publicity to its transition into an entertainment district including an indoor arena, a music club, a cinema, an exhibition space, and bars and restaurants. And the area is served by North Greenwich tube station, which was opened just before the millennium exhibition and which is the largest in Europe.
