If gold, amalgam or composite dental fillings don’t appeal to you, other options to consider are ceramics and glass ionomers. The former is made of porcelain and more resistant to staining than composite fillings. It can last over 15 years but can cost as much as gold.
If the problem is below the gum line or if the patient is a child, glass ionomers can be Used. These are made of glass and an organic acid. They generally cost the same as composite fillings but last for only five years.
“Glass ionomers release fluoride, which can help protect the tooth from further decay. However, this material is weaker than composite resin and is more susceptible to wear and prone to fracture,†said WebMD.Com and the Cleveland Clinic Department of Dentistry.
For damaged teeth that can’t hold traditional fillings, your dentist may recommend the use of indirect or direct fillings. These can be made of gold, porcelain or composite resins and come in two types: inlays and outlays.
Both are similar to composite or tooth-colored fillings. Indirect fillings are made in a dental laboratory first and may require at least two dental visits before being placed.
Inlays are made within the cusps or bumps in the chewing surface of the tooth. Outlays are more extensive and may cover one or more cusps. These can last up to 30 years.
“Another type of inlay and onlay - direct inlays and onlays - follow the same processes and procedures as the indirect, the difference is that direct inlays and onlays are made in the dental office and can be placed in one visit.
