Diamond Grading Labs Uncovered
So, you've decided to buy a diamond engagement ring, and you know how much you want to spend. Now you just need to decide on a diamond.
Firstly, a word of advice which could save you alot of money. Buy certified diamonds. And when I say certifed, make sure the grading is carried out by one of the world's leading independent laboratories, NOT by the jeweller who is trying to sell you the diamond ring.
Within the world of diamond grading laboratories, there are a number around the world.
Within the diamond insutry, the GIA and AGS are the most respected. GIA stands for Gemological Institute of America, whilst AGS stands for American Gem Society. Indeed, it was the GIA who founded the international diamond grading system (the 4Cs) which is Used across the world today.
The GIA and the AGS have the strictest, setting standards to which all the others often aspire. If a diamond is graded by one of these labs, then it is "what is says on the tin". OK, you might pay a small premium of a few % tgo get one of these graded diamonds, but in the grand scheme of things, when making a high value purchase on a diamond, it is a highly worthwhile investment.
Other diamond grading laboratories are EGL, IGI, HRD amongst others. These also provide reliable documentation for your diamond.
The golden rule in all of this is buy certified diamonds. If you need advice on which represents the best option for you, speak to your retailer.
