Answer My Health Question: What Testing Can Tell You

Advances in Medical testing have come a long way in recent years, and you know what they say - knowledge is the best defense when it comes to preventing and treating various health conditions. You may be asking yourself, "Should I be tested for heart disease? High cholesterol? Stroke risk? Can these tests answer my health question?" What testing can tell you is invaluable, because it can identify health issues before they become dangerous, or worse, life threatening.

Luckily, companies offering mobile preventive screenings are becoming more popular, especially because the process is quick, convenient, and painless. Below are some easy preventive screening tests that can give you a clearer overview of your health:

Stroke and Heart Disease

If you have a family history of heart disease, smoke, have diabetes, are obese with little or no physical activity, are under extreme stress, or have high cholesterol or high blood pressure, you may be at risk for coronary disease. Unfortunately, many times there are no recognizable symptoms of heart disease until it is too late, which is why preventive screening is so important.

There are several ways to test for conditions that may lead to a stroke or heart attack. One test uses an advanced color Doppler ultrasound (the same, safe ultrasound Used to view the fetuses of pregnant women) to identify plaque build-up in the arteries and to monitor blood flow velocity. If indeed you are found to have a problem, you will be given valuable information to take to your physician so that you can be proactive in addressing the problem.

A screening for heart attack and stroke risk may also include the use of an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG), which gives information about the rate and regularity of the heartbeat. ECG/EKG is sometimes the only way to detect irregularities in heart rhythm, which can lead to the forming of blood clots that could later make their way to the brain, causing a stroke. An ECG/EKG consists of placing sticky electrodes at various spots on the body, where they will give information about the electrical activity in the heart. Because the results are shown immediately as the machine traces the heart rhythm onto graph paper, you will immediately know the basic Vital Signs of your heart.

Next, you may want to have your blood tested via a Cholestec blood analysis device. This test includes a painless finger prick to determine cholesterol levels (both the bad LDL and the good HDL), liver function (AST and ALT), glucose, and triglycerides.

Another test to determine your risk of heart disease is the Framingham Risk Analysis. Only a few mobile screening companies offer this test, which determines your risk of having a cardiac event in the next 10 years, so be sure to look for one that does. By examining the results of your blood work, looking at blood pressure, and asking a series of questions about smoking, age, and treatment for hypertensions, this assessment can give you important information about your heart's future health.
