Buying New vs. Refurbished Medical Equipment
What is the difference between Used Medical Equipment and new medical equipment? Mainly: the price. Purchasing used medical equipment can sometimes save you over 50% on what you would pay for new equipment. This is especially important for small practices that are looking to decrease their set-up costs.
Most medical equipment that you can buy new, you can also find used and refurbished. Everything from defibrillators, EKG machines and sterilizers to ultrasound machines and operating tables. Refurbished medical equipment means that, though the piece of equipment has been used, it has been cleaned, sterilized if necessary, and restored to the best possible condition before being put out on the market once again.
The people who refurbish medical equipment are usually highly trained biomedical technicians who usually take great care in ensuring that their refurbished equipment is of the highest possible quality and durable. So going the refurbished medical equipment route can actually lead you to some pretty high end devices at sometimes half-the price of the new ones.
But is there an advantage to buying new equipment? Yes. For one thing, it’s easier to find good equipment with good warranties if you purchase it new. Before you buy a device form a refurbished medical equipment dealer, make sure you look at their credential and their quality standards, and also see if they have any customer reviews online.
Most nurses, doctors and medical staff have had experience using refurbished equipment and most of them usually don’t mind it. The most important part about a medical practice, after all, is the people who take care of the patients. The equipment must of course be highly reliable and precise, but if you can get the same quality for less, why not do so?
