The Diagnosis of Cancer
While there may be variations depending on the location and nature of symptoms, the diagnosis of cancer is usually based on the following:
Clinical examination to assess the general condition
- Auscultation allows the doctor to see the visible or palpable signs of the disease.
- Blood tests and urine provide knowledge of key elements such as:
- The number of red blood cells, white cells and platelets
- Hemoglobin
- The rate of creatinine
- Certain markers (substances related to the presence of cancer cells)
Endoscopy to explore a cavity
By introducing an endoscope (a thin, flexible tube equipped with an optical system) in a cavity, the doctor can see inside it and find a possible injury.
- Endoscopy explores the stomach and bronchi:
- during gastric endoscopy, the endoscope is introduced into the digestive tract through the mouth (sometimes under light anesthesia). This review does not last more than 5 minutes and is painless (although the sensation when passing the endoscope be unpleasant).
- during fiberoptic bronchoscopy, the endoscope is introduced into the lungs through the nostril.
These 2 exams last no longer than 5 minutes and, although unpleasant, they are not painful.
- Colonoscopy explores the colon: the endoscope, inserted through the anus (under anesthesia) can detect polyps even very small and take samples to analyze their nature.
Radiography to visualize the lungs and bones
Though increasingly replaced by new techniques, radiography remains a vital consideration in the diagnosis of lung cancer and bone cancer.
Ultrasound to visualize organs and make withdrawals
After applying gel on the skin of the patient, the doctor moves a probe over the area he wishes to explore and view images directly on a screen using ultrasound. Ultrasound can detect abnormalities visible, and also to conduct highly accurate sampling.
Mammography for breast explore
This is a breast x-ray to detect abnormalities (mild or severe). It does not present a definitive diagnosis but may guide to additional tests.
MRI to explore the brain, spinal bone and soft tissue
The patient, lying on a bunk, enters a kind of big hit. The device supports a large number of photographs that will be wrought by computer to be analyzed. This review, relatively long (20 to 30 minutes), is completely painless. Although "locked" in the device, the patient remains in contact with the handler and that it will be called by a bell.
The scanner to scan the whole body, especially the lungs
Also called CT scanner consists of a Bed that slides into a kind of large ring. It takes a series of photographs of the body area to explore, which is X-rayed "increments. The images are assembled by computer. This scan (5 minutes maximum) is totally painless.
The PET scan to detect cancer cells
This review is based on the injection of a glucose-like and weakly radioactive allows to visualize cancer cells because they consume much more glucose than healthy cells. The malignant cells will therefore absorb the radioactive material and can be identified by a special camera (the camera PET: Positron Emission Tomography). Totally painless test takes about 30 minutes.
Biopsy for a definitive diagnosis
It's mostly after discovering an anomaly during a preliminary examination (see above) that the doctor makes a biopsy, that is to say, taking a piece of tissue on the Body believed to be cancerous. Only analysis of cells (histology) of this fragment will affirm their cancerous nature and degree of malignancy. The biopsy is done under local anesthesia, or sometimes general.
For suspected breast cancer, we make a special biopsy called by Mammotome biopsy.
