Physical Views
In terms of adjustability, the screen is extremely limited. Height or rotation options are not available; however the monitor can be tilted forward and backward by about ten degrees. This should be enough for most people. However for taller people, the monitor will definitely need to be stacked on top of something, unless of course you prefer looking down on the screen.
One thing that stands out immediately about this monitor is its high build quality. Though it comes at a very low price, the materials and assembly of the enclosure do not reflect this whatsoever. The plastic Used over the entire body is very solid and includes a slight grain to it. Therefore including a nice shine that does not come across as cheap either. All of the different molded parts are comfortably packed with each other, and there are no unsightly gaps or misaligned plastic to mar the overall feel.
The only inputs on the back of the screen are for a VGA connector and a power plug.
The buttons for controlling the On Screen Display are fairly solid and provide a decent enough 'click' thus it doesn?t cause headaches adjusting the monitor. There are no problems with response delay as far as the buttons are concerned. The look and feel of this display will be more pleasing enough for 95% of monitor shoppers.
Impressions
Though a 19 inch widescreen monitor is shorter than a standard 19 inch screen, the sight becomes immeasurably more attractive because of our natural field of view. Human vision is wider than it is tall. This is why movie theaters use widescreen exclusively. All games benefit from the wider resolution, which results in a physically larger field of view - which is only a good thing.
Performance
The first question that is asked about any new LCD monitors by gamers is whether they ghost. Until about a year and a half ago, most LCD monitors had difficulty keeping up with fast paced games due to the poor response time when moving a pixel from white to black, or turning a pixel "on" or "off". Even after many long sessions of gaming, this monitor has not shown any problems with image streaking.
Screen uniformity is another major topic of concern for judicious monitor purchasers, and specially those looking to do graphic design work on their displays. However, the Acer AL1916W doesn't fare so well in this regard. The right and left side of the monitor are comparatively brighter than the rest of the screen, and it is seems that the backlight is leaking through in some area roughly under an inch on either side of the screen.
This monitor is extremely bright. Even at very low brightness levels, the backlight still seems to peek through. The brightness is fantastic in most instances, but it only helps to compound another issue with the screen. Colors on the AL1916W seem to be slightly anemic, rather than the Full, vibrant colors we are generally used to seeing from CRT's. Because of the backlight that is brighter-around-the-edges, colors along the left and right sides of the monitor are slightly weaker in comparison to the rest of the image.
All these generally do not cause problems in gaming or other motion sequences, as colors stay relatively true; however there is some noticeable falloff and color shifting when viewing a plain desktop screen from different angles.
While these issues will be slightly bothersome to some and utter deal breakers to a few, they really aren't that bad. The AL1916WB from Acer offers a relatively decent value. This monitor represents the first widescreen monitor aimed directly at the masses and its general performance matches what a majority of the market expects.
Acer can definitely work on a number of these things for a future revision. Currently, this monitor is recommended to those who don't need color accuracy, don't mind a few issues with the backlight, but want widescreen and great general gaming performance.
