Parenting Advice For Your Changing Child's Behaviour

Changing child behavior affects all children, whatever their age may be. Therefore, it is extremely important for parents to be consistent when it comes to discipline. If parents do not adhere to the rules and consequences they create for their households, it is likely that their children won't either.

Is your 1-year-old constantly heading toward the DVD player?

Is your toddling preschooler throwing a fit?

Are you authoritative?

Do your kids respect your authority?

If you have children, it is likely that you have answered yes to some of the above questions and no to others, like the authority question.

There are many ways in which a parent can vary their approach to managing a child with child behavior problems. Here are just a few that may suit your situation.

Babies and Toddlers - Birth to 2 years old.
Every body knows that babies and toddlers are curious. It is natural for them to be so, because often they are seeing and doing many things for the very first time. It will become necessary to eliminate any temptations by placing items such as TVs and video equipment, stereos, jewelry, small objects and especially cleaning supplies out of the reach of their inquisitiveness.

If and / or When your crawling adventuring baby or roving rampaging toddler heads toward an object that you have identified as being unacceptable or dangerous, you must calmly say "No" and either a)remove your child from the area or b) distract your child by providing them with a more suitable activity.

Timeouts are not effective for babies and small toddlers, but can be an effective discipline for toddlers age 2 to 4 years old. For example, a child who has been hitting, biting, or throwing food, needs to be told (in the simplest possible way) why the behavior is unacceptable and if necessary, should be given a time out for a minute or two at most. Timeouts longer than 2 minutes are not necessary for toddlers.

It is a really good idea to not spank, hit, or slap a child of any age for any reason. Especially babies and toddlers because they are unable to make any kind of connection between their behavior and any kind of physical punishment. Instead they will only feel the pain of the hit and not the lesson accompanying it.

Always know in your mind that kids learn by watching adults, quite obviously their parents, but also older siblings, grandparents, teachers and carers. Make an effort to ensure that your behavior is always role-model material. Your efforts at controlling your childs behavior will be more successful if you put your own belongings away instead of just issuing orders to your child / children to put their toys away when they can see that your stuff is left all around the house.

Being a parent and a role model for your kids can be classified as one of the toughest and most demanding jobs in the world. Training is not available, you have to learn how to be a good parent by first becoming a parent and from that moment on, many lessons are learned from plain and simple trial and error.

Nurture Your Children's Self-Esteem from the very beginning of their lives because, kids start developing their sense of self as babies. Their sense of self is a result of seeing themselves through their parents' eyes, from their parents tone of voice, their body language, and every expression that a parent displays is absorbed by their children.

Words and actions affect a child's developing self-esteem more than anything else. So by Praising your child's accomplishments, however small, you will make them feel important and they will learn to develop self pride as well.

Always try to avoid making loaded statements like "What a stupid thing to do!" or "You act more like a baby than your little brother!" because such statements do as much damage as physical punishment does. If not more!

Choose your words carefully, be compassionate, and if you really think it is important that they understand that something was stupid, then sit them down and try to explain to them why it is stupid. Do it simply, though! Also, let them know that everyone makes mistakes, even you and that no matter what, you still love them, even at times when their changing child behavior is unlovable.
